화폐 속의 여성들
여러분 나라의 화폐에는 누가 있습니까? 보통 화폐에는 그 나라에서 훌륭한 업적을
남긴 사람의 얼굴이 그려져 있습니다. 그러나 여성이 화폐에 그려져 있는 경우는 별로
많지 않습니다. 화폐에 가장 많이 등장하는 여성은 영국의 여왕인 엘리자베스 2세인데,
영국령을 포함해서 15개 나라 32종류의 지폐에 있습니다. 호주의 지폐에는 한 면에는
남자, 다른 한 면에는 여자가 그려져 있다고 합니다. 그 밖에도 칠레의 5천페소
지폐에는 라틴 아메리카에서 가장 먼저 노벨 문학상을 받은 가브리엘라 미스트랄이
있고, 인도네시아의 1만루피 지폐에는 네덜란드를 상대로 독립운동을 했던 튜트 낙
디엔이 그려져 있습니다.

Women inside currencies (money)
Who is in your country's currency? Usually, each country places a famous person who did something notable for the country in their currency. However, women are not often seen on currencies. The woman most commonly seen on currencies is Queen Elizabeth II of England. She appears on the currencies of 15 countries, including the countries under England's rule, on 32 different kinds of paper money. In Australia's paper money, a man appears on one side and a woman on the other. Gabriel Mistral, the first person to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, appears on Chile's 5000 peso money bill, while Cut Nyak Din, who fought against the Netherlands in the independent movement, appears on Indonesia's one million rupiah.

노벨상을 탄 여성들
1895년 노벨상이 제정될 당시에는 여성의 고등교육이 금지되어 있었습니다. 지금은
남ㆍ녀 구분 없이 교육을 받을 수 있게 되었지만, 아직까지 노벨상을 받은 여성의 수는
많지 않습니다. 2003년 현재까지 총 736명의 수상자 가운데 여성은 겨우 31명뿐입니다. 대표적인 사람은 1903년 노벨 물리학상과 1911년 노벨 화학상을 받은 마리 퀴리,
1979년 노벨 평화상을 받은 마더 테레사, 1991년 노벨 문학상을 받은 나딘 고디머 등
입니다.

Female recipients of the Nobel Prize
In 1895, when the Nobel Prize was first established, women were not allowed to get high education. Today, women and men are both allowed to achieve any level of education they wish, but women recipients of the Nobel Prize are not common. Up to year 2003, there are a total of 736 recipients of the award, but only 31 of them were women. The most representative of them were Marie Curie, winner of the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and of the 1911 Nobel Prize Chemistry, Mother Theresa, winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Nadine Gordimer, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Literature.

여성 대통령들
1893년, 뉴질랜드에서 최초로 여성에게 참정권이 주어졌으나, 대부분의 나라에서
여성의 참정권을 인정한 것은 20세기 이후입니다. 세계 최초의 여성 대통령은
1974년에 아르헨티나의 대통령이 된 이사벨 페론입니다. 그 이후로 계속해서
아일랜드의 메리 로빈슨, 필리핀의 코라손 아키노 등의 여성 대통령들이 선출되고
있습니다. 한국에서도 최근 여성 정치인이 점점 많아지고 있습니다. 머지않아
한국에서도 여성 대통령이 탄생할 지도 모릅니다.

Female Presidents
In 1893, New Zealand was the first country to allow women to participate in government work, but most countries accepted women's participation in government after the 20th century. World's first female president was Isabel Peron, who was elected as the president of Argentina in 1974. Following such unprecedented event, Ireland's Mary Robinson and Philippine's Corazon Aquino were also elected as presidents. Female politicians are growing in Korea as well. Maybe a female president will get elected in Korea one day.
